Georgetown Carnival 2019

Bellydance!

The pod has swam upstream to Georgetown. Bellydance classes will be held at Yaw Theater at Equinox Studios ~ Monday Nights

Bellydance Toolbox

Door open at 6pm ~ 6:15PM pm - 7:10 pm
- Intro to history and music
- Building strong dance skills
- Alignment for dance posture
- Shimmies
- Isolations - straight lines, circles, figure 8 and undulations
- Beautiful arms and hands gestures
- Intro to veil dancing and finger cymbals

This class focuses on solid foundation work. Perfect for new students or a great drill class for returning students. Experienced dancers can deepen their practice of bellydance by working thoughtfully into the isolations and rhythms as your body and mind open and are prepared to learn more subtle nuances in these powerful foundational moves.

7:15 - 8:10 BELLYDANCE STREET TEAM

- PERFORMANCE GROUP ~ INVITATION ONLY

Continuing Bellydance Class and the home of the performance collective "Sirens of Serpentine & “Bellydance Street Team”
- Finger cymbals, frame drum, veil, turn and isolation drills, cheeky combos and choreography
- Performance skills and preparation for "Sirens of Serpentine" and “Bellydance Street Team” performance(s)

  • Our focus during Covid has been (FCBD) general skills. We have been learning the original tribal bellydance group improv format that started the whole genre of group improve lead by cue. The Street Team uses this group improv format to create (mostly outdoor) pop up performances
All performances are 100% optional and open to all members of this class.

Vaccination and masks are required for in-person lessons. There is a video option on both Zoom and a live stream into our private group facebook group

FAQs

Are we really able to dance in person?!

Yes! Due to Covid the class is greatly restricted in the number of people we can currently enroll. We look forward to being able to welcome everyone with open arms in the future!

We show respect for the art community that is sharing space with us and a thoughtfulness in our actions that protects the most vulnerable members of the community by requiring masks and vaccination.

Plan to bring a yoga mat to set your personal space and help maintain social distancing. We are being given access to a rest room. We must use hand sanitizer before entering and wash hands before exit.

What should I wear to class?

Yoga or any exercise type clothes are perfect. Wearing a hip scarf will help you see hip isolations more clearly in the mirror. You can purchase scarves with coins or beads or just grab a beautiful scarf from home that you can tie around your waist to start. Some students like to get a little more dressed up in long skirts or harem style pants with a pretty top. There are LOTS of fun costume things that you can experiment with down the line but there really isn't much that you need to get started.

Do I need anything else?

You will need finger cymbals - Go get em’ if you don’t have any yet and a small frame drum. I recommend a 10” or 12” Remo frame drum to get started

dance journal or your phone to make class notes
water bottle or hot tea container
light knee pads (optional)
snacks (optional) - A small bags of nuts or some fresh veg can give you a lift if you need a little blood sugar boost

I recommend starting a special designated dance bag and keep it packed so you always have your beautiful things in one place ready to go.
